Led by Carolyn Davis with 21 points, six Kansas players scored in double figures as the Jayhawks handed Sam Houston an 87-59 non-conference women’s basketball loss Wednesday night at Allen Field House.
Britni Martin and Chanice Smith led Sam Houston (4-5) with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Angel Goodrich had 14 and Aishah Sutherland and Monica Engelman each added 12 for Kansas (11-1).
Kansas outscored the Bearkats 60 to 18 in the paint and out-rebounded SHSU 49-25 as Davis pulled down 13 boards and Sutherland added 10 rebounds.
“They had a lot more size than us, but I don’t think we did a good job of blocking out. They out-sized us,” said head coach Brenda Nichols. “I thought Zoe Tucker did a great job and was very physical with them. First half we shot the ball well. Second half we never got in a groove.”
Sam Houston led by three points four minutes into the game, but Kansas bounced back to take a 40-31 lead at intermission. The Jayhawks out-scored the Kats 47-28 in the second period.
The two teams combined for 43 turnovers with Kansas committing 23 and Sam Houston 20. The Bearkats scored 23 points off KU turnovers while the Jayhawks totaled 30 off SHSU miscues.
