Junior forward Sequeena Thomas scored 23 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead Sam Houston to a 94-74 victory in the Bearkats’ 2011-12 women’s basketball season opener Sunday afternoon at Johnson Coliseum.
Each of the Bearkats’ starters scored in double figures as Jasmin Wiley scored 17, Angela Beadle 14, Britni Martin 13 and Jasmine Johnson 12. Nicole Tucker led UT-Tyler with 14 points.
“For a season opener, we’re pleased,” Sam Houston head coach Brenda Nichols said. “We’ve got some of the pieces missing right now but we had an opportunity to get a look at some of the new faces and some girls that didn’t get to play that much last year. We like what we see — doing those little things, playing without the ball, still working even when you’re not getting the ball and not complaing. That is what makes champions.”
Sam Houston never trailed, jumping out to a nine point lead, 12-3, in the first five minutes and leading at halftime 49-32.
Beadle pulled down 12 rebounds to lead both squads as the Bearkats out-boarded the Patriots 51-24. Martin totaled eight assists and Johnson produced six.
A typical season opener, the two teams combined for 41 turnovers, 43 fouls and 25 missed threes.
Sam Houston State will play host to Mary Hardin-Baylor in their next game Friday at 12 noon in Huntsville. The contest is the annul “Pack the House” event with more than 3,000 Huntsvile and Walker County area elementary school students attending.
