The court will hear closing arguments today in John Ray Falk Jr.’s capital murder trial as the state rested its case Monday in Bryan.
Falk is accused of being an accomplice in the 2007 murder of former TDCJ correctional officer Susan Canfield during an escape. Jerry Duane Martin, who was also escaping, was driving a truck that hit the horse Canfield was riding, resulting in her death.
Special Prosecutor Jane Starnes read aloud an excerpt from a letter Falk had written his mother a month following the escape which said, “I will say this much. I can’t help but marvel that I am still alive. I was the one who took the guards’ pistols and a rifle and stood there in a shoot-out while bullets thumped and clanked off of things around me not only by the guards but from the city police, and I am amazed that not one of those bullets found its target.”
The state called DPS crime scene mapping and accident reconstruction expert John Tucker to the stand. He testified that were tire marks that were found near Ms. Canfield’s body that were believe to have been left by the truck driven by Martin.
