“We’re determined not to be a dying breed,” says Joe King of farming. “It’s important to me to bring farming back to life.” The 28-year-old and his nine younger siblings run Freedom Farms outside of Pittsburgh with passion, grueling work schedules and a single focus: to make farming cool again. Their battles with nature and each other are captured in Farm Kings, a new series premiering in September on GAC with a sneak preview  this Thursday, June 14 at 9/8cCheck out the complete schedule of all airtimes here »

Although they grew up farming, it wasn’t until recently that the three oldest King brothers – Joe, Tim and Pete – purchased 150 acres, and established Freedom Farms, appropriately named to represent the newly-found freedom they’ve enjoyed since their parent’s divorce and a subsequent falling out with their father who owns a neighboring farm.  They remain very close with their mother, Lisa, an indefatigable woman whose day begins at 4 a.m. baking pies (she turns out 30 per hour) for the family’s bakery operation before putting in a full day harvesting flowers and creating floral arrangements that are sold in Freedom Farms’ produce storefront.

While Joe oversees the big picture, Tim is the head farmer and Pete has been dubbed the ‘human harvester’ for his speed in hand picking corn. At 21, Dan desperately wants to join his three older brothers as a partner in Freedom Farms but for now remains a worker.

From overnight bakery shifts to early morning crop picking to keeping their storefront as well as stands at several local farmers markets stocked with the freshest produce possible, the King brothers must keep it all together professionally and personally, finding ways to overcome their differences while balancing work and family.

“The King family’s story is real to the core,” says GAC GM/SVP Sarah Trahern. “Their devotion to each other and to farming is inspiring and this sneak peek leading up to the series debut in September will introduce viewers to the family members that work tirelessly to keep their business thriving.”
