Josh Turner will release his new album, Punching Bag, on June 12 and invited GAC cameras along for the ride. Josh Turner: Packing A Punch will go behind the scenes of the making of Punching Bag and feature Josh performing some of his new music, as well as hits like “Why Don’t We Just Dance.” The special premieres tonight, June 7, at 8/7 p.m. CT on GAC.
“What makes him special is that quality in his voice that you know in the first two words of any song he does,” Randy Travis says of Josh during the special. Scotty McCreery, John Anderson, legendary Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, producer Frank Rogers and BMI exec Jody Williams also offer up commentary on what drew them to Josh.
Josh allowed cameras into his writer’s cottage, a log and stone structure he had built on his property as a writing retreat. “I wrote 27 songs in here, eight of them ended up on my new record,” he says. “As far as the music on this record, I want the fans to see that I’ve learned exactly who I am as an artist, as a person.” The cottage also contains many of his awards and honors.
Josh clearly remembers his first audience when he was just 13. Now 34 and married with three young boys, Josh is reflective of the time that’s passed since he first took the stage as a performer. “Here we are 21 years later and I’m running Josh Turner Enterprises, Incorporated,” he said. “I can still hear echoes of people telling me I was crazy for coming to Nashville, it just reminds me that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.”
