HOT DISH: Randy Travis’ Troubles

Hot Dish
(CMT Hot Dish is a weekly feature written by veteran columnist Hazel Smith. Author of the cookbook, Hazel’s

recipes at CMT.com.)

Possibly naked, lying across a road and allegedly drunk, Randy
Travis
was arrested near his wrecked 1998 Pontiac Trans Am that had been driven off the road and slammed into a construction
zone near his home in Tioga, Texas. The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a passing motorist at 11:18
p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 7).

Travis was arrested for driving while intoxicated, but once inside the police cruiser, he allegedly
became belligerent and began to shout and threaten to kill the cops while being transported to the station. A police spokesman
said Travis was brought to the station naked, but it was unclear if he undressed on the way or if he was discovered without
his clothes. In any event, when they arrived at the jail, police gave Randy a shirt and a paper suit to cover himself.

His
mugshot looked pretty awful, showing an angry Randy with a black eye and other facial injuries. He was released after posting
a $21,500 bond — $1,500 for a misdemeanor count of driving while intoxicated and $20,000 for a felony charge of retaliation
stemming from his threats against the law officers.

A drunk is a royal pain in the butt. Can you imagine Randy threatening
to kill the cops and him being buck naked? I wonder if Texas is the best place for Randy to reside. This is his second alcohol-related
arrest in 2012, both in Texas. In February, he was charged with public intoxication after being found in his car outside a
church.

Where Do the Stars Come From?
Where do all the stars come from? Well, a lot of the newer stars drop
by my kitchen on their journey to the big time. The past three weeks were rich with talent — handsome Dustin
Lynch
, the return of Bucky Covington from Rockingham, N.C., plus
Thomas Rhett, the son of Georgia Peach Picker Rhett Akins. There’s no
telling where these three young men’s careers will be one short year from now.

Thinking about all the new acts who
cut their teeth right here in my kitchen is overwhelming. Brad Paisley
was my very first guest, and he’s made more than one trip to my kitchen. I’ve been blessed with two visits from Jamey
Johnson
. Kid Rock stopped by, as did Larry
the Cable Guy
. I loved Zac Brown Band being here. Not only a great
cook and great musician, Zac is a great guy.

Hall of Famers George
Jones
, Little Jimmy Dickens and Bill
Anderson
came to visit, too, and the Eli Young Band have been here
twice or maybe more. I must take time to congratulate Mike Eli of the Eli Young Band and his wife Kacey on the birth of their
daughter, Kline, born July 30. The last time the band appeared here, Mike and Kacey had just learned that they were going
to be parents. The pretty Kacey was just beaming, and Mike could not talk for smiling. Kline is the first offspring for the
Texas group.

My friend Wynonna visited and so did the incredible Dierks Bentley and my favorite group, the
Grascals
. Garth Brooks and Trisha
Yearwood
ate from my table, and so did legendary chef Emeril Lagasse. Joe
Nichols
, Pat Green, Jack
Ingram
, Colt Ford and the always-wonderful Kellie
Pickler
came by twice, and newcomer Jana Kramer dropped in. It was
such a treat when Jessi (Mrs. Waylon Jennings) Colter came, and I loved
Laura Bell Bundy being here.

My beautiful friend Alison
Krauss
knows my door is always open for her and her handsome son, Sam. Speaking of people named Sam, Sam
Bush
has been here, and so has Rodney Atkins, Eddie
Montgomery
, Brett Eldredge, the ever-so-gorgeous Chuck
Wicks
, Crystal Gayle, James
Otto
, the Civil Wars, Casey
James
, Randy Houser, Lee
Brice
, Jerrod Niemann, Craig
Morgan
, the award-winning duo Thompson Square, Love
and Theft
, American Idol runner-up Lauren Alaina and Gloriana.

The wonderful foursome who, like me, work for CMT are the beautiful Alison DeMarcus, the equally beautiful Katie Cook,
the ever-wonderful and smart Cody Alan and handsome Evan Farmer. They’ve been here, fed their faces and promised to return.

Sharpe the Magnetic Zeros, Michael Franti Spearhead and the always-wonderful Jerry
Douglas
. Blackberry Smoke, Sonia
Leigh
and other artists from Brown’s Southern Ground record label will also appear.

Zac and company will return
to Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, S.C., on Oct. 20-21 for his second Southern Ground Music Festival there. The Charleston
event will feature the Avett Brothers, Grace
Potter the Nocturnals

Kenny Chesney
Is on Top With “Come Over”

“Come Over” topped the country
singles chart in just 11 weeks. One of this summer’s hottest songs, it is Kenny
Chesney
‘s 22nd single to top the Billboard country chart and has been certified gold for digital sales of 500,000
copies.

“Come Over” is the second single from Chesney’s Welcome to the Fishbowl which has already yielded the
hit “Feel Like a Rock Star” featuring
Tim McGraw. The Kenny/Tim Brothers of the Sun tour is one of the biggest
tours this summer. One million tickets have been sold, doubling the ticket grosses of both Roger Waters and Coldplay.

Kenny
and Tim played the biggest party of the year at the Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis on July 28. They followed with
50,000 at Browns Stadium in Cleveland on July 29. Their next tour stop takes place Saturday (Aug. 18) at Detroit’s Ford Field.
