Kenny Chesney is known for his high energy shows and to pull them off, he pushes himself to stay in the best shape possible. As he prepares to kick off his Brothers of the Sun co-headlining tour with Tim McGraw, he’s been busy rehearsing and spending time in the gym. Kenny is on the cover of June’s Men’s Health and tells the magazine about his fitness routine.
When Kenny hits the gym, his goal isn’t to gain muscle. “I don’t go in here and try to bench-press 200 pounds,” he said. But he can do 300 pushups in 10 minutes. His overall goal is to maintain his energy level for his two-plus hour live show, many of which take place in soaring heat and high humidity.
“You think you’re sprinting on this treadmill,” he said. “When I’m up there it’s like I’m at a constant sprint at a 15 level. But the thing you have onstage that you don’t have in the gym is adrenaline.”
Kenny has been training with Daniel Meng of MUV Fitness Coaching in Nashville for more than a decade. Daniel says Kenny’s training plan starts in January and amps up as they get closer to tour time. “It’s a very intense workout routine usually reserved for athletes,” Daniel said. “But Kenny has a certain standard he holds himself to when putting on a show, and it’s my job to get him there.”
Kenny also keeps an eye on what he eats. He doesn’t eat many dairy products, hasn’t had salt in 10 years and hasn’t had bread in ‘a while.’ He uses Sundays as his cheat day, allowing himself to indulge a little. He does admit to enjoying a cold beverage however.
“I’ve never abused my body with drugs,” Kenny said. “I’ve never smoked. But I will say that I’ve probably been overserved a lot. You can’t spend 19 years on the road and not have a few drinks.”
The Brothers of the Sun Tour will kick off June 2 in Tampa. The June issue of Men’s Health is on newsstands now.
