OFFSTAGE: Carrie Underwood Grew Up on Terri Clark

Published on October 03, 2012 by CMT News

Carrie Underwood
(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and
out of the spotlight.)

In the late ’90s, who wasn’t a Terri
Clark
fan? She was everywhere. So it makes sense that Carrie Underwood
chose to sing some of Clark’s songs at talent shows when she was a young girl. At one of those shows, when she was not quite
a teenager, she did Clark’s debut single “Better Things to Do.”
Then in another, Underwood covered Clark’s “Emotional Girl,”
which hit country radio in 1997. I so wish that the grown-up Underwood (she was 21 at the time) had chosen Clark’s smash No.
1 hit from 2004 “Girls Lie Too” as one of her American Idol
audition songs. Underwood told VH1 on the Behind
the Music
special that she didn’t win any of those talent shows as a girl. “I never won anything. Ever,” she admits.
“So I learned how to lose.” Maybe she figured Clark covers were not the good luck charm she was looking for.
