OFFSTAGE: Eli Young Band, Will Hoge Talk Nashville Theme

Eli Young Band
(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and
out of the spotlight.)

Obviously, I like a lot of the country songs on the new ABC show, Nashville. But
none more so than the very first episode’s theme song — the Eli Young
Band
‘s “Even if It Breaks Your Heart.”
(Although a close second would have to be when when Hayden Panettiere did “Undermine,” written by Trent Dabbs and Kacey
Musgraves
.) I was wondering if the Eli Young Band loved having their song kick off the show as much as I did. So I asked
frontman Mike Eli when I chatted with him in the real Nashville last week. “It’s one of those moments where, you know, we
still picture ourselves as this garage band from Texas. So having moments like this — being on a network show like Nashville
– is so surreal,” he told me. And one of the song’s co-writers, Will Hoge,
echoed Eli’s sentiments. “Being born and raised in Nashville, it’s such a cool thing to be a part of a show that’s based here
and is about singer-songwriters like me,” he said. “And I still do get my heart broken sometimes. That’s what you have to
do. That’s the business. If you can get your heart broken and keep coming back, you’re destined for big things.”

There’s
actually a Music Lounge set up on ABC’s website so that
if you like the songs you heard on an episode, you can find out who sings them, who wrote them, what they’re called, and in
some cases, download them. I can’t wait to hear what songs they have on Wednesday night’s (Nov. 7) episode.
