OFFSTAGE: Jake Owen: No Daddy Songs Yet

Published on July 12, 2012 by CMT News

Jake Owen
(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and
out of the spotlight.)

When I had a chance to catch up with Jake
Owen
after his Chicago show this past weekend, I wanted to know all about his baby, due in November. And what that baby
girl would mean to his music. As of right now, Owen doesn’t think who he is as a father will change who he is as an artist.
“When people found out we were having this baby, I started getting emails from songwriters. Not even saying, ‘Hey, man, congrats
on the baby,’ but just to send songs and say, ‘This song is so your life right now,’” Owen said. But he remains steadfast
in his devotion to the kind of music he is already making. “I’m so excited we’re having a little girl. We’re so blessed. But
I’m not gonna be singing songs about being a daddy. Just because I’m married now and just because I’m having a child doesn’t
take away from what my whole vision is. People have to understand that your career is a career, whether it’s baseball or singing
or being the president. In our format, people tend to involve their personal lives and their career in the same bubble, and
that doesn’t work sometimes. Songs are just songs.” I can see where he’s coming from. So we also talked about artists who
do sing songs about parenthood, even though they don’t have kids. Like Carrie
Underwood
, who sounded just like a mother in “Jesus,
Take the Wheel”
even though she’s not one. And Kenny Chesney, who
does a very believable job on “There Goes My Life,” even
though he doesn’t have a baby girl. Owen added to that, “Right. And, I mean, Johnny
Cash
never shot a man in Reno.”
