OFFSTAGE: Patsy Cline Makes Rolling Stone Sob

Published on June 25, 2012 by CMT News

Patsy Cline
(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and
out of the spotlight.)

Now that Rolling Stone has come right out and said that Patsy
Cline
, Dolly Parton and Taylor
Swift
are among the top Women
Who Rock
, I think that makes it pretty much official.

The magazine compiled a collection of girls with “the fiercest
albums that female rock rollers have given the world.” Calling these albums the essential musical statements from all
different
genres, they span generations with their list. And that list includes three albums from three country stars.

No. 15 is The Patsy Cline Collection from 1991, because the “badass cowgirl drama queen belts some of the torchiest,
weepiest country songs ever, hitting high notes that make you sob into your margarita.” They also list her cheatin’ song “Three
Cigarettes in an Ashtray” as one of the best tracks.

No. 32 is The Best of Dolly Parton from 1975, and the magazine
calls her hit song “Jolene” one of the most obsessively complex love stories ever captured in a country song.

No. 45
is Taylor Swift’s Speak Now from 2010, because they think she has a flawless ear for what makes a song click. The essential
moment from this record is the song “Long Live,” which Rolling Stone says is “the best Bon Jovi song Bon Jovi never
wrote.”
