OFFSTAGE: "Red Solo Cup" Writer Says Everybody’s too Serious

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and
out of the spotlight.)

Toby Keith’s “Red
Solo Cup”
was just nominated for a CMA Award for music video of the year. And obviously, everybody knows that this song
isn’t deep or moving or on the verge of changing the world. It’s just a little love letter to a plastic cup. But it’s not
like the song’s writers put pen to paper after one too many Solo cups full of beer. They really did it out of respect for
old-school novelty songs from guys like Roger Miller, Jerry
Reed
and Ray Stevens. “For some reason that’s gone from country music
today,” the song’s co-writer Jim Beavers said in the new issue of People Country. “Everybody takes themselves so seriously,
and artists want to appear so cool, we forget sometimes people just want to laugh and have fun and be stupid.” He admits,
though, that not everyone wants to laugh and have fun and be stupid. Beavers says some haters think, “This song is what’s
wrong with America!” In the meantime, Keith’s latest video for his latest single, “I
Like Girls That Drink Beer,”
premiered Friday (Sept. 7) on CMT and CMT.com.
