OFFSTAGE: "Truck Yeah" Writers in Awe of Tim McGraw

Tim McGraw
(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and
out of the spotlight.)

Getting Tim McGraw to cut a song you wrote
is nice work if you can get it. It’s such a long shot, in fact, that songwriters Preston Brust and Chris Lucas of the LoCash
even joked about it. “Chris Janson, one of the guys we wrote it with, said we should make ‘Truck Yeah’ the next
LoCash single,” Brust told me. “And we go, ‘Well, if Tim McGraw doesn’t call tomorrow and say he wants to cut it, then maybe
we will.’ We were totally joking. But I’ll be a son of a gun if McGraw’s people didn’t call us the next day. Can you believe
it? The next day! It’s Tim. The icon. The greatest of all time.”

Once they got that huge news, Brust told me they
prayed. “Nothing’s ever for sure in this town. So we said, ‘Let’s pray he loves it after he cuts it. Then let’s pray that
his team loves it. Then let’s pray it’s a single. We prayed all along the way,” he said. “Then we heard he was rehearsing
it for the live show. We couldn’t believe it. It’s been such an honor, and such an amazing ride.”

Prayers aside, I
asked Brust if he had celebrated all the good news yet.

“I don’t know if I’ve stopped celebrating,” he laughed. But
when “Truck Yeah” debuted at No. 22 on the charts, making it McGraw’s highest solo chart debut of his career, the party really
started. “I got a text from (co-writer) Danny Myrick the day we found that out, saying, ‘Corner Pub. 5:00. Celebration shots.
Truck yeah.’ And we’re all gonna keep celebrating.”
