OFFSTAGE: Was Springsteen Forced Out?

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and
out of the spotlight.)

I tend to look at rules in black and white. But if Bruce
was breaking one, I might look the other way.

As you probably heard, he was playing past curfew this
weekend in London’s Hyde Park, and the powers that be literally pulled his plug. He’d been playing for three hours and Sir
Paul McCartney was joining him for some classic Beatles songs. Can you imagine how thrilled the 76,000 English fans must’ve

Everyone, you know, except the organizers of the event, who later said they stopped the show because “the curfew
is laid down by the authorities in the interest of the public’s health and safety” and that “road closures around Hyde Park
are put in place at specific times to make sure everyone can exit the area in safety.”

And what do the artists think
of the way that rule was enforced?

Lady Antebellum, who opened
the show that night, was disappointed. Hillary Scott said, “I’m sure there was definitely a reason. I hear that they had a
very strict curfew in Hyde Park.”

Then there’s Eric Church, who
had a No. 1 song about going to Springsteen concerts. “Stayed there ’til they forced us out,” he sings in that tune about
a July Saturday night. Makes you wonder what he’d think about Springsteen being the one forced out.

Springsteen’s guitarist
Steve Van Zandt said, “English cops may be the only individuals left on earth that wouldn’t want to hear one more from Bruce
Springsteen and Paul McCartney! On a Saturday night! Who were we disturbing?”
