Taylor Swift picked up her fifth straight American Music Award for Favorite Female Country Artist at the 40thAnnual American Music Awards Sunday night. Voted on by fans, the win also marked her eleventh AMA win overall.
“I want to thank the fans,” she said during her acceptance speech. “You guys are the one who voted on this. You have made this such an amazing couple of weeks for me with Red coming out. We just put some of the dates on sale for the tour and you guys sold them out in minutes and I’m so stoked. I guess what I’m trying to say is I’m really really happy right now and that’s all because of you.”
Luke Bryan became a first time American Music Awards winner when he picked up the award for Favorite Country Male Artist. Visibly excited, he took a moment to celebrate with Lady Antebellum who presented him with the award before making his acceptance speech.
“I tell you what, I want to thank my wife for letting me be a big kid out on the road every week playing shows,” he said. “This is a fan-voted award and for some reason I’ve always been really really lucky with fan voted awards. It means the world to me. Thanks for making this happen for me.”
Lady A had no sooner presented Luke with his award before they were back on stage accepting an award of their own. The trio picked up Favorite Country Band, Duo or Group for the third year running. “We’re going to dedicate this to the over a million fans that came out this year to see us on the road,” Charles Kelley said. “This is our first every headlining tour and this is because of you guys.”
Carrie Underwood snagged the last country award given out on the night. Her album, Blown Away, was named Favorite Country Album. Carrie has now won the award for every album she has released. She paused to pass husband Mike Fisher her purse to hold before taking to the stage to make her acceptance speech.
“This means so much to me because I really am so very proud of this album,” she said. “I’d like to thank God for giving me the love for music and inspiration to make this album and for giving me the most amazing fans in the entire universe for supporting us each and every night when we’re on the road with the Blown Away Tour. I couldn’t love my life any more than I do right now.”
On the performance side of the awards, Taylor took the stage for a performance of her song “I Knew You Were Trouble” while Carrie debuted her new single, “Two Black Cadillacs.” The awards also included a special Stevie Wonder tribute to Dick Clark, who passed away earlier this year. Justin Bieber picked up the night’s big award when fans named him Artist of the Year.
