Falk Capital Murder Trial Hears Witness Testimony in Bryan

John Falk Jr.’s capital murder trial in Bryan, in which he is being tried for his part in the death of TDCJ correctional officer Susan Canfield in 2007 during a Wynne Unit escape, continued Wednesday.

Madilene Loosier, a Bedias woman taken hostage by inmates Jerry Duane Martin and Falk while she was making a deposit at a bank on Highway 30, testified. She said Falk pointed a rifle at her and commandeered her truck. Martin jumped in the back. Law enforcement officers shot at the tires of her truck as they drove away.

Former HPD Sgt. Ron Cleere and Walker County Sheriff’s deputy Brian Smallwood caught up with the truck and observed Martin and Falk jump out. Eventually Falk was taken into custody behind WalMart, and Martin was located in the woods which is now the present location of Target.

A City employee, Jay Miller, who followed Falk and Martin when they left the Service Center, gave witness testimony. The Bryan courtoom jury also heard testimony from HPD Assistant Chief Darrel Slaven and former city employee Larry Hortsman. Martin had stolen Hortsman’s sign shop truck from the Service Center.

The trial continues this week in Bryan.
