Fatality on I-45 in New Waverly

Published on July 06, 2012 by Larry Crippen

The North Montgomery County Fire Department was dispatched to assist the New Waverly Fire Department shortly after 1:30 this morning to help in a major accident involving an entrapment. When emergency units arrived at the accident scene in the northbound lanes of I-45 at FM 1374 near New Waverly, they found an 18-wheeler loaded with pipe had been hit from the rear by another truck pulling a grocers supply trailer. The driver of the grocery supply truck was trapped in the wreckage. As crews tried to free the driver a short time later, it was determined that he was dead. The frame of the grocery truck protruded almost ten feet into the load of pipe on the other truck.

Northbound lanes of I-45 were closed for hours. The driver of the pipe truck was from Houston and was reported to be uninjured. The driver of the grocery truck was from Katy. The investigation of the accident by DPS continues.
