Truancy Case in Willis

Published on May 31, 2012 by Larry Crippen

Montgomery County J-P Lanny Moriarty, at the request of the County’s District Attorney, has signed an order that vacates the contempt of court conviction that sent 17-year-old Willis High School honor student Diana Tran to jail last week. Her 24-hour visit to jail was for excessive truancy.

Tran works at two jobs to help support her family while taking honors classes. Officials say Judge Moriarty made the decision to rescind the charge, in part, after looking at the extenuating circumstances and because her summons to court had not notified her of her right to an attorney or to have one appointed.

The action opens the way for the issue to be expunged from the 17-year-old’s record.
