GoBearkats.com Led by right fielder Jake Arrington who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, Sam Houston State totaled 16 hits for the second day in a row to run-rule UTSA 13-2 in a one hour, 57 minute Southland Conference baseball game Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

Sam Houston (18-9, Southland 9-2) extended its current winning streak to seven games and held on to its stop in first place in the league standings.

Caleb Smith produced his second complete game in three outings, limiting the Roadrunners to four hits and striking out four of the 27 batters he faced in seven innings of work.

Five other Bearkats had multiple hit games. Third baseman Kevin Miller started the scoring for SHSU with a two-run single in the first inning.

Designated hitter Anthony Azar and first baseman Ryan O’Hearn had one-run singles in the second. Azar scored two runs with a triple in the seventh inning and O’Hearn had a two run homer in the fourth inning. Arrington added a two-run single in the seventh.

Only twice before in the 25 years since Sam Houston moved up to the NCAA Division I level in baseball have the Bearkats produced a seven-game winning streak. The 1991 Kats won seven in a row while the 2011 squad produced an 11-game winning streak.

Sam Houston will be out to complete its second Southland Conference series three-game sweep Sunday when the Roadrunners and Kats begin play at 1 p.m. The last time the Kats took consecutive weekend three-game Southland sweeps was in 2008 against Lamar and McNeese State.
