GoBearkats.com – Junior forward Britni Martin scored 16 points and junior guard Chanice Smith added 15 more to lead Sam Houston to a 67-46 Southland Conference women’s basketball victory over Nicholls State Saturday afternoon at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum .
Bearkat freshman center Angela Beadle and junior forward Sequeena Thomas each grabbed 10 rebounds as Sam Houston’s out-boarded the Colonels 49-41.
Sam Houston (8-6, Southland 3-0) never trailed jumping out to a 15-4 lead in the first four minutes of the game and leading by as many as 22 points in the second half. Nicholls State (9-7, Southland 2-1) was led by Sumar Leslie with 14 points and Alisha Allen with 12.
Sam Houston pressure and tight zone defense held Nicholls to a season low 21 percent field goal shooting (13-of-62). The Colonels, who came into the game with a 41.3 field goal shooting mark, went 2-of-22 from three point range.
The Bearkats hit 26-of-64 from the field for 40.6 percent shooting. Sam Houston outscored Nicholls 24-16 in the paint and picked up 16 points off nine steals.
Sophomore guard Jasmine Johnson scored nine points and Beadle added eight.
