GoBearkats.com Sam Houston alumni will have the opportunity to gather and celebrate a season of championships and post-season success at a special reception for The Woodlands Bearkats on Friday, August 3.
The SHSU Woodlands Alumni and Friends Reception will be held at the new SHSU Woodlands Center, August 3 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Featured guests at the event will be University President Dana L. Gibson, SHSU head football coach Willie Fritz, head baseball coach David Pierce, head men’s and women’s basketball coaches Jason Hooten and Brenda Nichols, along with many other coaches and university administrators.
The Bearkat athletic program just completed one of its most successful years ever. The football and baseball teams both won Southland Conference championships. The Bearkats also advanced to the Southland tournament in men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, soccer and softball.
Football won a Southland and school record 14 games in a row to advance to the NCAA Division I National Championship game.
Baseball reached the finals of the Houston Regional after upsetting No. 1 seed Rice. Sam Houston also nearly knocked off eventual regional champion Arkansas in the tournament’s opening game. The Razorbacks went on to reach the NCAA Baseball World Series semifinals in Omaha.
The women’s basketball team saw its first NCAA national post-season action with an appearance in the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI). Softball was the runner-up in both regular season and tournament play while volleyball and soccer reached the Southland tournament semifinals.
The quartet of head coaches from the football, baseball and men’s and women’s basketball teams all return most of their top players and are eager to discuss the upcoming 2012-13 seasons with Bearkat alumni and friends.

The Woodlands Alumni reception comes just as preseason Bearkat football camp opens. A total of 50 lettermen including 19 starters return from last year’s 14-1 championship squad. Included in that number are five players who earned All-America honors in 2011 (running back Tim Flanders, safety Darnell Taylor, defensive end J. T. Cleveland, wildcat back Richard Sincere and cornerback Dax Swanson).
During the Bearkats’ magical run through the 20-team playoff, record crowds attended the three playoff victories at Bowers Stadium in Huntsville and the Kats were featured on three national telecasts on ESPN and ESPN2.
Sam Houston’s 20-6 record during Willie Fritz’s two seasons as the Bearkats’ head coach is the best two-year mark in the program’s 96-year history.
