GoBearkats.com / Lake Charles, La. – McNeese State pounded out nine runs on 15 hits as the Cowgirls handed Sam Houston State a 9-3 Southland Conference softball loss Saturday afternoon.
The loss gave the Bearkats and the Cowgirls a Southland Conference split in the two-game series. McNeese State now stands 25-11 for the year and 8-2 in Southland Conference while Sam Houston drops to 18-17 overall and 8-4 in league play
Sam Houston scored two runs in the top of the second inning. Third baseman Shelbi Tucker singled and later tallied on a RBI hit by second baseman Allysa Coggins. Catcher Ashley Isbell scored on an error to give the Bearkats a 2-1 lead. But the Cowgirls added a run in the bottom of the second, then five more in the fourth inning and two in the sixth.
A ground ball by Tucker scored Jessica Slater for Sam Houston’s final run in the top of the seventh.
