GoBearkats.com / Arlington – Britni Martin scored 18 points including four three-pointers to lead Sam Houston State to a 61-45 Southland Conference women’s basketball victory over UT-Arlington Wednesday at the new UTA College Park Center.

All four of Martin’s field goals were three points and the junior forward from Conroe went 6-of-6 from the foul line to post her 17th double figure scoring performance of the season.

Sam Houston (12-9, 7-3) remains in first place in the Southland Conference West Division. UT-Arlington (4-17, 2-7) was led by Sabreena DeNure with eight points.

Sequeena Thomas saw her streak of six consecutive double figure scoring and rebound games end as the junior forward led both teams with 16 rebounds but was held to eight points.

Sophomore guard Jasmine Johnson went 5-of-10 from the field to score 12 points for Sam Houston. Jasmin Wiley added six and Nyha Carter scored five.

The Bearkats led from beginning to end, building a 33-20 lead at intermission and out-scoring the Mavericks 28-25 in the second half.

Sam Houston forced UTA in 20 turnovers, scoring 21 points off the miscues and limited the Mavericks to 25.4 percent shooting from the field (17-of-67).

“This was a big road win for us,” Sam Houston head coach Brenda Nichols said. “We need to keep pace with McNeese and SFA and in contention for a high seed in Katy at the Southland tournament.”

The Bearkats return to Huntsville to play host to A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday at 2 p.m. at Johnson Coliseum.
