Maalouf Properties and Draft Bar owner Tarek Maalouf has told the Huntsville Item that SHSU officials have harassed him and his customers over his posting of about 200 signs protesting his view of their intention to use eminent domain to take the Army Reserve Property on Sam Houston which he recently purchased.
Mr. Maalouf told the Item that he and his bar patrons have received “unusual attention” from university police officers . He said that on Wednesday night that SHSU police “issued an unusual series of tickets” to Draft Bar customers “including those who parked across the street from the bar on Sam Houston Avenue after 5 PM.” The parking lot is for SHSU faculty, staff, and students who hold the proper permit.
According to the Huntsvile Item, on Wednesday, August 28th, an HPD officer gave Maalouf a citation for jaywalking on Sam Houston Avenue near his newly acquired property where no crosswalk was designated. At that time, Mr. Maalouf was removing his signs from the right of way to comply with instructions from the City.
In addition, the Item reports that SHSU Police checked out the Draft Bar Wednesday night searching for a female student whose mother had contacted them in regard to a welfare concern. Maalouf views the recent tickets and visit by university officers as intimidation.
