Boston Marathon Bombing Suspects Chased by Police: One Killed, One on the Loose

Published on April 19, 2013 by Larry Crippen

A massive manhunt is underway for the man earlier identified as Boston Marathon Bombing “Suspect #2″ in Watertown, Massachusetts, following the death of “Suspect #1″ in a shootout with police after the killing of an MIT police officer. Pictures of the suspects were released by authorities yesterday. The suspects are reported to be brothers from Chechnya. The brother who is “Suspect #2″ and at present, on the loose, is 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. His dead brother is 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev.  They’ve been in the U-S several years.

The District Attorney of Middlesex said they suspect the two men killed the MIT officer on campus late last night, then stole a car and let the driver go without harming him.

Later, police pursued the suspects in the hijacked vehicle into Watertown where the suspects threw explosives from the car. Gunfire was exchanged with the suspects and police during the chase–one suspect was hit and later died, while the other escaped.

Federal authorities are looking into whether the suspects had military training from overseas.

Residents of the Watertown area were being asked to stay in their homes. Business owners were also asked not to open their businesses this morning.
