Firefighter Jimmy Williams reports that New Waverly Firefighters responded to a call Sunday afternoon involving an 18 Wheeler hauling 67 head of cattle overturned on State Hwy 150, east of New Waverly.
Firefighters were dispatched just before 2 pm to assist DPS and Walker County Sheriff’s Office deputies already on the scene. Although there were no human casualties, all 67 cows had been trapped in the double decker trailer when it rolled onto its side near the intersection of SH 150 and Family Lane. Two cows died as a result of the accident. Some of the remaining cattle were standing, but most were on their sides on top of each other and were in danger of all of them dying as the temperature within the trailer soared due to the hot afternoon sun.
Crews on the scene realized that they could not remove all of the cows through the gates on the rear of the trailer, so they cut their way into the roof.
New Waverly Fire Chief Jacob Slott contacted a group of local cowboys working in the area and requested their assistance.
The rescued cattle were loaded into additional trailers to continue their journey.
