City Council Discusses Charter Issues

Published on July 17, 2013 by Larry Crippen

The Huntsville City Council met in regular session last night at City Hall.

One of the issues under consideration by the council regards recommendations by the Charter Review Committee. Two of the issues being focused on include age requirements for councilmembers and at-large versus district, or ward, representation.

Former council candidate Kendall Scudder passed long to the council his views on both issues, addressing the age requirement first . . . .

Councilmember Keith Olson countered Scudder’s argument saying, “I don’t think anybody else as a business owner would take someone 18-years-old and give them free reign of their checkbook.”

In regard to the at-large versus ward representation. Mr. Scudder said that at-large council positions can marginalize minority representation and that district representation was “more in-tune with the U-S Constitution.”

During Public Comments, Paul Davidhizar commented on Scudder’s comments as to the constitutionality of the at-large verus ward representation issue . . . .

Mayor Mac Woodward has asked for more citizen input on any changes to the City’s Charter.
