City Preservation Ordinance Passed

Published on November 13, 2013 by Larry Crippen

At Tuesday night’s Huntsville City Council session, an historic preservation ordinance was up for consideration which allows special designations for landmarks and districts. The ordinance has previously been under lengthy discussion by the council.

After downtown properties owner John Smither voiced his objections to the ordinance not being voluntary and noting his support of 90 percent of the building owners in downtown not wanting a mandatory ordinance, an amendment was proposed by Position #4 Councilmember Keith Olson . . . .

After council discussion, Olson’s suggested amendment was passed, and the new historic preservation ordinance for Huntsville was approved.
