Elderly Montgomery County Jail Inmate Charged with Trying to Hire a Hitman

Published on April 16, 2013 by Larry Crippen

An 84-year-old inmate in the Montgomery County Jail, Dorothy Canfield, faces charges of solicitation to commit capital murder and solicitation to commit aggravated assault on a public servant. Canfield is accused of attempting to hire a hitman to murder Montgomery County’s Assistant DA Robert Freyer and put DA Brett Ligon “in the hospital for two to three weeks.”

She was already in jail on a second-degree felony theft charge. Canfield met with an undercover investigator who she agreed to pay $5,000 dollars to kill Assistant DA Robert Freyer and $2,500 dollars to put District Attorney Brett Ligon in the hospital. Early Monday morning, Canfield confessed the plot to Texas Rangers.
