OFFSTAGE: Carrie Underwood Says Julie Andrews Has a Royal Air

Published on April 15, 2013 by CMT News

Carrie Underwood
(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and
out of the spotlight.)

When Carrie Underwood takes on The Sound of
Music
later this year, she says she’s
not even going to try to sound like Julie Andrews
, who played the same Maria von Trapp character in the 1965 film. “I
think once people tune in and realize that [our version] is not a remake, they won’t compare it to the movie,” Underwood said.
And since she thinks Andrews has such a royal air about her, trying to imitate her “would be like you’re beneath her.” Maybe
the three-hour broadcast of the legendary musical, airing live sometime around the holidays, will feel just like a concert
for Underwood. She certainly has the pipes to get through a 90-minute set of her own music, so singing songs like “Sixteen
Going on Seventeen,” “So Long, Farewell” and “Something Good” shouldn’t be too rough on her. But she says she appreciates
what a giant challenge it will be. “Everybody keeps saying, ‘People don’t do this anymore — singing live,’” Underwood said.
