OFFSTAGE: Keith Urban: Waylon Jennings Helped Sway Nicole Kidman

Keith Urban
(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and
out of the spotlight.)

Back in 2005, Keith Urban was just
starting to date actress Nicole Kidman. And he tells Us magazine that at the time, she had no history of country music
at all. So did he sing her a few of his own hits from that year, like “Tonight
I Wanna Cry”
or “Making Memories of Us”? No. What
he did was give her the one album from 1970 that was so meaningful to him. “I went down to the record store and got her The
Best of Waylon Jennings
. That was her first real taste,” he
said. The album has classics like 1963′s “Just to Satisfy You,” 1968′s “Only Daddy That’ll Walk the Line” and 1969′s “MacArthur
Park”(way before it ever got the disco remix treatment from Donna Summer). Urban was just a toddler in Australia when this
Jennings album was released, so I’m not sure if he was raised on it Down Under or if he came to appreciate it after he moved
to Nashville in the ’90s. But either way, I love that Urban turned to such a badass romantic to help him woo the woman who
would become his wife.
