The TDCJ inmate convicted of the 2007 murder of correctional officer Susan Canfield, 43-year-old Jerry Duane Martin, is set to be executed by lethal injection tonight at six in Huntsville.
During an escape attempt in a stolen truck Martin struck the horse Ms. Canfield was riding, throwing her from the horse resulting in fatal head injuries when she hit the roof of the vehicle.
Martin asked that appeals in his case be dropped and that there be no delays in his execution.
Martin’s fellow escapee, John Falk Jr., awaits a retrial.
TDCJ Correctional officers from Walker County prison units will participate in a show of support for the late Officer Canfield outside the Huntsville Unit tonight. They plan to form a “wall of gray” where the Canfield family walks to and from Martin’s execution. A riderless horse with a black saddle, part of a ritual standing for a fallen officer, will also be there.
A scholarship fund to honor Officer Canfield has been set up by friends and TDCJ correctional officers at SHSU’s College of Criminal Justice.
