Heavy Rain Causes Problems Across County

Published on November 01, 2013 by Larry Crippen

A lot of rain over the past few days caused problems for drivers across Walker County.

The heavy rain caused rising water resulting in stalled vehicles from the SHSU campus to Elkins Lake. Back on Wednesday afternoon, flood conditions forced the closing of sections of Robinson Creek and Bowden roads near FM 1374. Yesterday, HISD delayed the start of school and buses for two hours. Also Thursday, Trinity ISD released classes at 10 AM due to electrical problems.

Reports of rainfall ranging from 6 to 10 inches throughout the area kept New Waverly Firefighters busy Wednesday and Thursday. In a 24 hour period, firefighters responded to more than a dozen calls for service, most of which were related to the heavy rainfall. New Waverly VFD personnel responded to 5 motor vehicle accidents, 2 reports of fire from power lines or lightning and 3 emergency medical calls. Thursday morning they also responded in the department’s rescue boat, conducting welfare checks on several residents trapped by rising waters around their homes on Gourd Creek near FM 1375 E.
