April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Wednesday, April 10th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, the SHSU Counseling Center and several university and Huntsville organizations will collaborate to host the 2nd Annual “Ignite the Night” event. The event is to promote awareness about and honor survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence throughout the community. Organizers will give a voice to all of those that have been impacted in some way by sexual assault and abuse. The event will be held behind the Lone Star Residence Hall at SHSU with a rally of speakers and performances. An art and poetry contest is featured and t-shirts will be available at the event, or April 3rd through the 10th between 10 and 2 in the SH Mall area. Any proceeds or donations will benefit SAAFE House.
All remaining shirts will be sold at the event on April 10th. The T-shirts will be $5.00 dollars for non-students and $3.00 dollars for SHSU students with a Sam I.D. All proceeds will be donated to SAAFE House.
In honor of April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Dr. Maryam Ilahi of the SHSU Student Counseling Center, is accepting poetry and art submissions regarding sexual violence or abuse. Anyone local is invited to submit art or poetry that supports a sexual assault and abuse-free environment. Selected submissions will be displayed in the LSC Atrium April 3rd through 10th, and winners will receive a free “Ignite the Night” t-shirt and be recognized at the “Ignite the Night” event–you may request anonymity, and it will be respected. All submissions will be returned after the event. Deadline for submissions is Thursday, March 28th, by 5:00 p.m., and should be sent to:
