At the beginning of the week in court, Walker County Commissioners heard an update on how the County’s $20 million dollar jail project is coming along from Jail Project Manager Eddie Smith. By Monday, the topsoil had been removed and about one-third of the 100,000 yards of select soil needed underneath the building pad had been brought in. They’ve also been testing the soil compaction and doing other soil moving work.

Smith added that during the next phase, once all the topsoil is under the pad, they’ll start drilling piers and start a retaining wall on the southeast corner. Project meetings will start the first Tuesday of each month.
