Major Explosion Reported at Fertilizer Plant in West, Texas

Wednesday, an explosion in a fertilizer plant in the town of West, Texas may have killed at least 15 people.  Several firefighters were reported missing.  One-hundred-seventy-nine people were hospitalized.  The factory is in ruins, and 50 to 60 nearby homes were damaged.

Sgt. William Patrick Swanton of the Waco Police estimated 5 to 15 fatalities from the plant explosion.  Swanton said that 3 to 5 firefighters were killed, and there is also a law enforcement official who is not accounted for.

The explosion happened just before 8 Wednesday evening and registered a magnitude of 2.1 on the earthquake scale.
