A Monday afternoon collision between a pickup truck and a van at the corner of State Highway 75 and FM 2793 severely damaged both vehicles, leaving one driver trapped in the mangled remains of his vehicle. The collision occurred just before 5 pm when a Chevrolet pickup struck a mini-van in the driver’s door, destroying much of the driver’s side of the van and trapping its driver.
New Waverly Firefighters and Walker County EMS responded from the New Waverly Fire Station and were on the scene within minutes of the initial 911 call. An EMT from Walker County EMS climbed into the mangled vehicle and began stabilizing the trapped victim while firefighters went to work removing the damaged side of the vehicle to gain access to the patient. Using hydraulic spreaders and cutters referred to as the “Jaws of Life”, New Waverly Firefighters were able to open up the side of the vehicle and the driver was extricated within 10 minutes of their arrival.
The van’s driver was then moved to the waiting Walker County EMS unit where he was stabilized and transported to Huntsville Memorial Hospital. After removing the driver, the scene was quickly cleared and opened back up to waiting traffic. The driver of the pickup was checked out on the scene but was not taken to the hospital. DPS Troopers are conducting the crash investigation.
