Second-Hand Jewelry & Precious Metal Ordinance Amended

Published on June 20, 2013 by Larry Crippen

At this week’s regular city council session, an ordinance regarding secondhand jewelry and precious metal was considered for amendment. It was proposed that the time a purchasing dealer would be required to hold precious metal jewelry would be 14 days for time to verify that it wasn’t stolen.

Councilmember Don Johnson suggested a shorter time–five or seven days.

Councilmember Fitch, who has been working on the ordinance, said on the basis of his law enforcement experience a longer time should be required . . . .

Councilmembers agreed and approved the ordinance with an amendment of the term “precious metal” changed to “crafted precious metal.”
