THE SHSU BEARKAT BASEBALL TEAM WILL HOST A KEY SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE SERIES THIS WEEKEND AT DON SANDERS STADIUM. THE KATS WILL HOST MCNEESE STATE IN A 3-GAME SERIES BEGINNING TODAY AT 6:30PM. GAME 2 IS SET FOR SATURDAY AT 4, WITH THE SERIES FINALE SUNDAY AT 1PM.

MEANWHILE, THE HUNTSVILLE HORNETS WILL HIT THE ROAD TO BRYAN TODAY FOR A 4PM CONTEST AGAINST THE RUDDER RANGERS. THE HORNETS ALSO LEARNED THURSDAY THEIR TWICE-DELAYED DISTRICT 18-4A MATCHUP AGAINST MONTGOMERY HAS BEEN RE-SCHEDULED FOR 5:30PM MONDAY DUE TO WET GROUNDS AT THE HOME FIELDS FOR BOTH SCHOOLS. ALSO TODAY, THE ALPHA OMEGA LIONS WILL HOST THE WOODLANDS PREP AT 4PM AT ALPHA OMEGA ACADEMY.

IN SOFTBALL, THE HUNTSVILLE LADY HORNETS WILL BE ON THE ROAD TONIGHT TO TEST THE CANEY CREEK LADY PANTHERS AT 7PM IN GRANGERLAND.

IN TRACK & FIELD, THE HUNTSVILLE HORNETS & LADY HORNETS WILL COMPETE TODAY AT A MEET IN MONTGOMERY.

THERE’S PLENTY OF PRO RODEO ACTION ON TAP THIS WEEKEND AT THE WALKER COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS. THE FAIR’S ANNUAL PRCA RODEO PERFORMANCES ARE SET FOR 7:30PM TODAY & SATURDAY AT THE FAIRGROUNDS ARENA.

ON A SAD LOCAL NOTE, FORMER HUNTSVILLE HORNET HEAD FOOTBALL COACH BEN HOOKER HAS PASSED AWAY AT HIS HOME IN TENAHA. HOOKER, WHO WAS 76, ALSO PLAYED FOOTBALL FOR SHSU AND IS A MEMBER OF THE BEARKAT HALL OF HONOR. SERVICES ARE SET FOR SATURDAY IN TENAHA.

IN BASKETBALL, THE SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE HAS LOST ITS LONGEST-SERVING HEAD MEN’S BASKETBALL COACH. DANNY KASPAR, WHO WON 3 CONFERENCE TITLES IN 13 YEARS AT STEPHEN F. AUSTIN, IS LEAVING NACOGDOCHES TO TAKE THE HEAD COACH’S JOB AT TEXAS STATE-SAN MARCOS….THE LEGENDARY FORMER MEN’S BASKETBALL HEAD COACH AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON – GUY V. LEWIS – LEARNED THURSDAY HE WILL BE AMONG THE MEMBERS INDUCTED THIS YEAR IN THE BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME.
