Councilmembers Discuss Insurance Issue

Published on December 04, 2014 by Larry Crippen

One of the agenda items during this week’s council session that received a lot of attention regarded a contract with the American Fidelity Insurance Company for Stop Loss insurance coverage and payment of nearly $397,000.

Position #1 Councilmember Andy Brauninger objected to the large premium increase . . . .

Human Resources Director Julie O’Connell responded to Councilmember Brauninger’s concerns, passing along what the insurance companies look at in regard to a request for proposal . . . .

Councilmember Brauninger said that “When you have a 50 percent increase in insurance costs in one year” he thinks “that there’s got to be a look at sharing that cost with someone besides the taxpayers of Huntsville.” He was referring to the employees sharing in the increase cost.

Position #4 Councilmember Keith Olson also commented on the higher premium issue . . . .

Councilmembers approved the increase in payment for Stop Loss coverage.
