Gas Explosion in New York Under Investigation

Published on March 13, 2014 by Larry Crippen

That gas explosion Wednesday morning in New York’s Harlem district that flattened two apartment buildings has killed at least seven by last count, injured 70, and left several people unaccounted for.

In recent weeks, residents of the buildings had complained of smells of gas leaks.

A team from the National Transportation Safety Board arrived on the scene of the blast Wednesday evening. An investigation will focus on how the Con Edison utility company takes care of gas odor issues and will be putting together a timeline of events leading to the explosion.
