Joe Byrd Cemetery Dedication Held Monday

Published on May 06, 2014 by Larry Crippen

Monday morning, state and local officials along with family members dedicated an Historical Texas Cemetery Marker at the Captain Joe Byrd Cemetery on Bowers Boulevard in Huntsville.

As we stood in front of the new marker about to be unveiled, Walker County Historical Commission Marker Chairman Donna Coffen explained the significance of the event . . . .

TDCJ Chaplain David Collier presented the invocation. Huntsville Director of Tourism Kimm Thomas read a welcome from the City to guests. Local Historical Commission member Lee Murrah read a special poem about “Peckerwood Hill.”  From the Texas Prison Museum, Sandra Rogers presented a biography of Joe Byrd and recognized family members. The unveiling of the marker and reading of the inscription involved TDCJ cemetery caretkers Billy Holmes and Scott Spearman.

The cemetery was named for the assistant warden who was in charge of clearing the cemetery of debris and locating the graves.
