Local Athletes Meet Success

Published on May 12, 2014 by Larry Crippen

The spotlight’s been on some of our local athletes lately.

Saturday, former SHSU Bearkat running back Timothy Flanders signed with the New Orleans Saints as a free agent. Flanders grew up as a fan of the team. As a free agent, he will have to qualify for a spot on the Saints’ roster.

Thursday night, Huntsville Hornet Justin Gilbert was picked eighth overall in the NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. Friday in Cleveland he appeared at an introductory press conference. Saturday, a couple hundred of his family and friends congratulated him at a celebration at the Texas Prison Museum Conference Center.

And Friday, Huntsville High School Senior Audie Wyatt, taking part in the UIL Track and Field State Meet for the first time, won the Class 4A boys pole vault state championship at Mike A. Myers Stadium at UT and was awarded the gold medal.
