Recent HISD Accountability Ratings Discussed At Thursday’s Board Meeting

Published on August 15, 2014 by Larry Crippen

HISD Trustees met in regular session last night where HISD Superintendent Dr. Steve Johnson capped-off three-and-a-half years of his hard work and experienced leadership for the school district before leaving the Superintendent’s post. Deputy Superintendent Sonny Cruse will become Interim Superintendent.

The focus of the meeting centered on the recent District Accountability Ratings. In regard to the rating, HISD “Met Standard” on 28 of 31 index targets set by the state.

HISD’s Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction, Marjetta Spriggs, spoke about one of the main issues that prevented the District from meeting all the standards across-the-board in the rating . . . .

Ms. Spriggs revealed a plan to improve accountability ratings through improved training during new teacher induction, a special consulting teacher who will aid in improving student math scores, academic coaches for writing and classroom walkthroughs for improvement strategies.

Local LULAC Board President John Escobedo, Dr. Richard Watkins and Dr. Helen Watkins expressed criticism for the District such as not taking more direct responsibility for student test score performance to a need for more bilingual and minority teachers.

Dr. Helen Watkins had several suggestions for improvement in the District . . . .

Dr. Watkins also said the District should “utilize resources that are producing successful results in the District and community” and “tap into the successful programs in other school districts.”
