Scams Underway in Walker County

Published on May 09, 2014 by Larry Crippen

Walker County Sheriffs Office Operations Captain Tim Whitecotton informs us that a phone scam is currently underway in Huntsville.

The perpetrator calls up individuals and tells them that they’ve missed jury duty and that a fine has been assessed. The perpetrator then tells the person they are scamming that if they don’t pay up immediately that they will be arrested by the end of the day.

They next ask for a credit card number. The Sheriff’s Department does not collect fines over the phone. If you get a call like this, contact the Walker County Sheriff’s Department at 435-2400.

Also, The Huntsville Police Department is currently investigating reports of a telephone scam where the caller claims to be a Sheriff’s Lieutenant, and tells the victim that they have a warrant for their arrest. The caller then advises the victim in order not to be arrested they must get a “Green Dot Money Card” from WalMart and pay the fine.

Beware that this is a scam. Huntsville Police Chief Kevin Lunsford urges citizens not send money, checks, or any other type of payment to an unknown party. If you receive one of these calls or are unsure, please contact the police department at 291-5480.
