THE SHSU BASEBALL TEAM EXPERIENCED A MAJOR SHAKE-UP OVER THE WEEKEND, WITH THE BIGGEST TREMOR OCCURRING AT THE TOP OF THE PROGRAM. HEAD COACH DAVID PIERCE, WHO GUIDED THE KATS TO 3 CONSECUTIVE REGULAR-SEASON SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS,  IS LEAVING SAM HOUSTON TO TAKE THE HEAD COACH’S JOB AT TULANE UNIVERSITY IN NEW ORLEANS. UNDER PIERCE’S DIRECTION, THE BEARKATS ALSO PLAYED IN 3 STRAIGHT NCAA REGIONAL TOURNAMENTS.
AT THE SAME TIME, THE KATS MAY ALSO HAVE TO RE-BUILD MUCH OF THEIR STARTING LINEUP FOLLOWING THE MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL DRAFT. A TOTAL OF 5 SHSU JUNIOR PLAYERS WERE DRAFTED – PITCHER TYLER EPPLER, 1ST BASEMAN RYAN O’HEARN, SHORTSTOP COREY TOUPS, 3RD BASEMAN CARTER BURGESS AND OUTFIELDER COLT ATWOOD WILL NOW HAVE TO DECIDE BETWEEN RETURNING TO SAM FOR THEIR SENIOR SEASONS SIGNING WITH THE ORGANIZATIONS WHO DRAFTED THEM.
