HUNTSVILLE’S JUSTIN GILBERT IS EXPECTED TO MAKE HISTORY TODAY IN NEW YORK CITY. GILBERT, A FORMER HORNET QUARTERBACK & DEFENSIVE BACK, AND WHO PLAYED COLLEGIATELY AT OKLAHOMA STATE, IS EXPECTED TO BE CHOSEN IN THE 1ST ROUND OF TODAY’S NFL DRAFT. IF THE EXPECTED 1ST-ROUND CALL COMES, GILBERT WILL BE THE 1ST HORNET IN HISTORY TO BECOME A 1ST-ROUND NFL DRAFT PICK.

ANOTHER LOCAL ATHLETE HOPING TO HEAR HIS NAME CALLED IS FORMER SHSU RUNNING BACK TIMOTHY FLANDERS, WHO SET SCHOOL & SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE RUSHING & SCORING RECORDS DURING HIS 4 SEASONS AS A BEARKAT. FLANDERS IS HOPING TO BE DRAFTED IN THE LATER ROUNDS OF THE DRAFT.  THE DRAFT BEGINS TODAY AT 7PM ON ESPN, AND WILL CONTINUE FRIDAY & SATURDAY.

IN SOFTBALL TODAY, THE SHSU BEARKAT WOMEN WILL SEE THEIR 1ST ACTION IN THE ANNUAL SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT. THE 2ND-SEEDED KATS WILL FACE CENTRAL ARKANSAS AT 1:30PM IN THE 1ST ROUND OF THE DOUBLE-ELIMINATION TOURNAMENT WHICH WILL TAKE PLACE AT NORTH OAK PARK IN HAMMOND, LA.
