A NEW ERA OF HUNTSVILLE HORNET FOOTBALL BEGAN MONDAY WHEN THE HORNETS HIT THE FIELD FOR THEIR 1ST PRE-SEASON WORKOUTS. 1ST-YEAR HUNTSVILLE COACH RODNEY SOUTHERN WELCOMED HIS SQUAD TO THE PRACTICE FIELD WITH LITTLE TIME TO PREPARE FOR THE AUG. 30 OPENER AGAINST COLDSPRING AT BOWERS STADIUM. THE HORNETS WILL WORKOUT EACH DAY THIS WEEK PREPARING FOR SATURDAY MORNING’S SCHEDULED 11AM GREEN-WHITE SCRIMMAGE AT THE HUNTSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL PRACTICE FIELD.

1ST-YEAR SHSU HEAD FOOTBALL COACH K.C. KEELER ANNOUNCED MONDAY HE HAS CANCELLED THE BEARKATS’ SCHEDULED THURSDAY NIGHT INTRASQUAD SCRIMMAGE. WITH LESS THAN 2 WEEKS BEFORE THE KATS’ SEASON OPENER AT EASTERN WASHINGTON, KEELER SAYS THE TEAM IS TURNING ITS FULL ATTENTION TO PREPARING FOR THE OPENER.

AND IN A SAD NOTE THIS MORNING – LONGTIME KSAM SPORTS STAFFER CHRIS BURTON HAS PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 46. BURTON, WHO SERVED SEVERAL SEASONS AS KSAM’S SIDELINE REPORTER FOR SHSU BEARKAT GAMES, PASSED AWAY IN HOUSTON AFTER A BRIEF BATTLE WITH CANCER. HE WAS ALSO A MEMBER OF THE SHSU ATHLETIC HALL OF HONOR AFTER A STELLAR COLLEGIATE CAREER IN BASEBALL FOR THE BEARKATS. FUNERAL SERVICES ARE PENDING.
