TDCJ Trusty Offenders Fill Sandbags For Flood Management

Published on May 20, 2015 by Larry Crippen

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) is teaming with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to prepare areas of the Lone Star State for flooding in the upcoming days by having outside trusty offenders fill sandbags at three locations in East Texas.

Twenty outside trusty offenders from the Wynne Unit in Huntsville filled nearly 700 sandbags in the first hour of operations on Tuesday at the TxDOT facility located at 421 North Interstate 45. Almost 2,250 tons of sand will eventually be delivered to TxDOT facilities in Huntsville, Liberty and Rusk.

A State of Texas Assistance Request (STAR) was initiated by TxDOT asking for TDCJ labor assistance and support for filling a total of 60,000 sandbags.

The sandbags will be loaded onto pallets at each TxDOT location and then distributed to municipalities along the Trinity River that ask for them due to flooding through the Texas Department of Emergency Management.
