HMH Board Chairman Mac Woodward Comments on Hospital’s Future

Published on July 17, 2017 by Larry Crippen

Speculation over the future of Huntsville Memorial Hospital has many wondering whether the closure of the local hospital could become a reality. According to hospital officials, the answer is a definite “NO.”

Mac Woodward, HMH Board Chairman, said “Over the past decade, HMH has overseen a dramatic improvement in healthcare services for Walker County residents, despite a challenging and ever-changing healthcare industry. Being able to support approximately 90-percent of our community’s healthcare needs is something special, especially for a rural hospital such as ours.”

Woodward also pointed out “HMH’s board of directors is confident that the current administration will continue to help the hospital navigate a dynamic and ever-changing industry with the same success it has seen over the past five years.” The average daily census at HMH has increased more than 300 percent since the current executive team came on board. In addition, thirteen new providers have been recruited to the region, bringing much-needed profitable services and providers to Walker County.”

Although HMH has continued to excel in business and patient care, a national consulting firm, Stroudwater Associates, has been retained to review operations, finances, and identify potential areas to improve efficiency. Woodward said, “HMH is looking forward to sharing new findings with the community.”

Woodward stresses both the hospital district and the hospital’s board of directors ultimately want what is best for Walker County residents. He says that over the next few weeks the board will be kicking off initiatives designed to help the community understand the role that HMH has played in the growth of the community and the way the expansion of services has been possible, despite what many are calling the “demise of rural healthcare.

Woodward summed up his thoughts by saying, “By working together, I believe we can clear up any confusion, resolve any concerns, and move forward stronger than ever.”
